Bright Chimezie Makes Chart Debut After Davido Acknowledges Musical Influence
Following a recent encounter with Afrobeats artist David Adeleke, better known by his stage name Davido, veteran Nigerian musician Bright Chimezie has found himself back in the spotlight.
Shortly after the release of Davido’s latest album, 5IVE, the two musicians met in Lagos.
On Monday, May 16, Davido was shown embracing Chimezie and conversing with him in a number of Instagram videos. Chimezie’s distinctive “Zigima” musical style has earned him widespread acclaim.
Davido praised Chimezie’s work during a previous video conference, which was followed by this in-person meeting.

He specifically acknowledged that Chimezie’s song “Because of English” from 1984 served as a creative inspiration for his most recent single, “With You,” which featured Omah Lay.
Because of English made its debut at No. 99 on the Spotify Nigeria Top 100 chart, just two days after their encounter.
Chimezie’s early experience of being disciplined at school for his poor English is reflected in the song.
