River Plate were reduced to 10 men after Castaño was sent off by the referee for a second yellow card in the 91st minute. He was first yellow-carded in the 28th minute for a rough challenge on a Monterrey midfielder.
All efforts for Monterrey to break the deadlock proved abortive as both teams shared the spoils.
In the other game, Inter Milan kept their hopes of winning the Club World Cup alive by coming from behind to snatch a late victory against Urawa Red Diamonds in Seattle.
Ryoma Watanabe’s 11th-minute strike looked to have earned the Japanese side a shock victory, but Lautaro Martinez’s spectacular overhead kick and Valentin Carboni’s stoppage-time strike eliminated the Japanese side from the competition.
